TO RIGHT THE WRONG
WORKHOUSE INMATES WHO WISHED TO MARRY AT HUNSLET

The elaborate classification scheme adopted the Hunslet Board Guardians in their large workhouse situated on the outskirts of Rothwell, has led to dilemma. This dilemma arises out the provision cottages for aged and deserving couples.
For from 20 to 30 years Charles Halstead and Margaret Chatham have been known in the parish of Middleton, near Leeds, as Mr. and Mrs. Halstead. They are both of age—72 years—and force of circumstances bent their steps towards Hunslet Workhouse. Previous to going there, however, they made an endeavour to right the wrong by asking the Vioar of Middleton to publish their banns. Before this could be effected Charles Halstead had entered the workhouse, and the Vicar of Middleton, therefore, placed the matter before the Vicar of Rothwell. The Vicar of Rothwell approached the master of the workhouse, and the master of the workhouse made application, yesterday, to the Hunslet Board of Guardians for permission for the Vicar of Rothwell to unite the aged couple in the bonds of holy matrimony.
It was decided in a few minutes by tie Board not to entertain the application. So, after climbing the hill of life together, Darby and Joan must pass down their declining years practically alone, though probably only separated by the width of a brick wall.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 at Green Buildings, Hunslet, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as single, a General Labourer, aged 46 born Dewsbury, a Boarder of Margaret CHATHAM.6
In the census of 5 April 1891 at 9 Green Folds, Hunslet, Yorkshire, England, Charles was listed as aged 57 born Thornhill, the Head of Household; a Labourer at Coal Pit, living with his wife Margaret.7
In the census of 31 March 1901 at Quarry Cottage, Middleton, Yorkshire, England, Charles was listed as aged 65 born Dewsbury, the Head of Household; a Coal Screener at Colliery, living with his wife Margaret.8
His wife, Margaret, died in 1906 in the Hunslet registration district.9
Charles's death was registered in 1909 in the Hunslet registration district.10

Coroner Says Worsthorne Man was Negligent
"Death by misadventure" was the verdict by a Jury at a Burnley inquest yesterday, on Edwin Jones (39), coal dealer. Ormerod Street. Worsthorne. who died in hospital on Wednesday from abdominal injuries sustained when a motor lorry he was driving was involved in a collision with a wall in Salterforth Lane. Cliviger, the previous day.
The Coroner (Mr H. Ogden) said there was evidence of negligence and careless driving. Apparently Jones was travelling at such a speed that he took the corner too wide.
Fred Stanworth, coal dealer. Gorple-road, Worsthorne, said after a delivery Jones had a lemonade and a glass of beer at Mereclough. Jones was perfectly sober and fit to drive.
As they turned a corner in Salterforth Lane the lorry shot across the road and crashed into the wall. The only explanation he could give was that the road was wet. Witness was uninjured.
Mrs. Ethel Eastwood, of Higher Red Lees Road, Cliviger, said the lorry took the corner wide and appeared to go round at too fast speed.
The cause of death was internal injuries, probably due to Jones coming into violent contact with his steering wheel.4

Newspaper Report: WESTHAMPNETT
A HALSTED FAMILY MEMORIAL
Much interest attached to the unveiling of a memorial tablet to three members of the Halsted family in Westhampnett Church during the morning service on Sunday. Ten generations have been born since the founder of the family fortunes. Wiliam Halsted, lived as a yeoman farmer in the parish. His name appears on the Bishop's transcript of the parish register of 1700, his lands were sold piece by piece to the Duke of Richmond and Gordon. He died in 1732, ten years before the death of his brother, Henry, who was established as a tailor in Chichester. The family grew and spread by marriage to many parishes In West Sussex, the family tree showing that in more recent years Charles Halsted's three sons, Charles, Henry. and John. had ten, nine, and eight children. Henry founded the Chichester iron foundry business which became defunct during the 1930's, and lived at the Warren, Summersdaie His son, Laurence, bequeathed a substantial sum during the recent war to St. Richard's Hospital. Descendants of his brother, John. who lived at Itchenor House, have settled In New South Wales; and others of the family established branches now living In South Africa at Johannesburg. Bulawayo. Rhodesia, and Durban. The tablet unveiled on Sunday has been erected by members of the family to honour and preserve the memory of three of the family who sacrificed their lives in the two world wars.
