On Friday last, the body of a man who was only known by the name of “Ben," was found drowned in the Hulme middle lock of the Bridgewater Canal, Manchester, having gone to close the lock gates. He has since been identified as Benjamin Halstead, of Wakefield Road Sowerby Bridge, a canal boat driver in the employ of Mr. Albert Wood, carrier. When the body was recovered it was taken to the Cavendish Street mortuary, and the Coroner, at the inquest on Monday morning, asked why it had not been taken to Bridgewater Street. as Cavendish Street is over a mile away.—P.C Oldershaw said that Bridgewater Street mortuary was closed, and Inspector Mattinson explained that it was being used for stabling the police van horses. The Coroner (Mr. S. Smelt) expressed astonishment that the mortuary should have been closed in view of the number drowning cases which took place in the neighbourhood of Holme locks. It was found that Halstead met his death accidentally, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly. Deceased, who was 61 years of age was in the service of the Rochdale Canal Co. up to few months ago. residing at Gauxholme, Todmorden. and occasionally attending Knowlwood P.M.
