He was an old Rugby player having played with Halifax in the 80's as a forward. Prior to that he was connected with the Salterhebble club, hvaing as associates, such well known players as Pinder, J. Bairstow and J.E. Fox. Deceased leaves a widow and family of seven, two sons and five daugters. A sad feature is that the youngest daughter, Miss Bessie Halstead, was to have been married on Saturday next, but the wedding has been postponed.¹¹

Samuel Thomas Halstead was charged with stealing a piece of timber value 2/6, the property of Mr. A. Tapley, builder.
Detective-constable Southey said: At 6.55 last evening I was in company with Police-constable Fleet in a meadow overlooking some houses in the course of erection on Maxton Hill. We saw the prisoner come from the back of some cottages in Manor Road, where he lives. He went to some buildings in course of erection and we saw him take the piece timber (produced), which was lying on the ground. He walked away with it towards his own house. We went after him, and he was stopped by Police-constable Fleet as he was entering the backway of his house, 21, Montrose Cottages. I told him I should take him into custody and charge him with stealing the timber. He then asked to be allowed to put it back or pay for it. He said he was sorry he had taken the wood, but he wanted it to finish a shed he was building. I took him into custody, and brought him to the police station, where he was detained. Mr. Tapley was called them, and he identified the wood as his property, and charged the prisoner with stealing it, who made no reply. The prisoner is a labourer, working for the Admiralty. Twenty-four shillings was found in his possession.
