GIRL CYCLIST WHO APPEARED TO LOSE CONTROL.
A Burnley vicar and a former member the Burnley Town Council, who were on their way to a service at Newchurch-in-Pendlc, rendered assistance to a girl cyclist who was fatally injured when she crashed into a wall the junction of Heights Lane and Noggarth Road, Fence, last Sunday evening. They were the Rev. H. Battye, Vicar of St. Catherine's Church, and Mr. G. C. A. Haffner, and they were travelling towards Newchurch in Mr. Haffner's car when they found the girl lying in the road with her feet entangled in the machine and her head being supported by a young man who had been cycling with her. Mr. Haflner, took the girl to the Victoria Hospital, and the Rev. H. Battye continued the journey on foot, arriving in time for the service.
The story of the tragedy was told at the inquest in the Burnley Town Hall yesterday, afternoon on the body of Lilian Stott (19), 8, Fielden Square, Todmorden, the victim of the accident. Her father, Alfred Stott, a master window clearer, said she left home on her pedal cycle about two o'clock last Sunday afternoon, and in the evening he was informed that she had met with an accident and had been taken to the Victoria Hospital. He went to the hospital and stayed about half an hour, but she was unoonscious, having received severe head injuries. Later in the evening he was informed that she had died. She had been riding the cycle about five months.
James Matthew (28), of Smallbridge, Rochdale, said he frequently cycled with the deceased and a number of others during the past two months, and called for her at her home last Sunday afternoon. About G-10 p.m. they were cycling down Heights Lane, and witness was in front until they were approaching Noggarth Road, when Miss Stott overtook him at a fast speed, apparently having lost control of her machine. Before he could shout a warning she was near the wall on the opposite side of Noggarth Road, and he heard her shout "Oh" as she crashed into the wall. He rushed to her and found that she was injured, and he got her head on his knee. She was bleeding profusely and appeared to be unconscious. He shouted for help, and about a minute later a private car came along and she was taken to the hospital.
Answering the Coroner (Mr. H. Ogden) witness said that deceased was a very good cyclist. They tightened the front brake of her machine before leaving home that afternoon.
P.C. Norris gave evidence regarding an examination of the scene of the accident and of the damaged bicycle. The front wheel was badly damaged and it was not possible to find the state of the brake, but the rear brake was in good order.
The Coroner told the jury that it was clear that Miss Stott was travelling too fast to negotiate the turn into Noggarth Road, and he thought the only verdict they could returnwas the of death from misadventure. The cause of death was concussion following a fracture of the skull.
The jury returned a verdict as suggested by the Coroner.4
