The East Lancashire Coroner conducted inquest at Nelson, yesterday, on the body of Arthur Halstead (62) overlooker, who resided with his son-in law at 60 Chapelhouse-road, and who was found dead in an armchair in the kitchen with a large wound in his throat. A bloodstained razor was lying the table beside him.
Albert Veevers. son in law, said deceased had been of a jolly disposition, and, though addicted to dunk, he had never threatened to commit suicide. On Sunday he went out, and returning home in the evening at 10.60 was under the influence of drink. Witness went to bed, leaving deceased sitting in a chair. Next morning when he got up he found his father-in-law sitting by the table with his throat cut. The gas was still burning. Witness denied that there bad been anv trouble about matters.
A verdict "Suicide" was returned, the Coroner remarking that there was no evidence to show the state of deceased’s mind at the time.¹²

Apart from his business, music was his particular hobby, and he achieved some local distinction as an organist and violinist. He leaves a widow and three children (all married) to mourn his loss.¹¹

The remains Mr. John Halstead, the well known musician, were laid to rest in Heptonstall slack Cemetery, last Saturday As the body was borne into the chapel, Mr. A. I. Gill, organist performed "O rest the Lord". The Rev E. G. Thomas delivered a suitable address, after which the organist played "I know that my Redeemer liveth,’ and as the body was borne from the chapel the "Dead March" Messrs. W. Ingham, Ed. Ashworth, J.W. Fritton, John Pickles, C. W. Ashworth and A W Latham, members of Hope Chapel choir at the time Mr. Halstead was organist there, were the bearers. On Sunday morning those gentlemen attended Hope Chapel out of respect, and the choir sang the anthem "No shadows yonder" in the afternoon they attended Slack Chapel.¹¹ His estate was probated on 18 July 1906 at London, England. The estate was valued at £863 3s 10d.¹⁰

Yesterday week, at the Burnley Bankruptcy Court, before His Honour Judge Bompas, K 0.. John Frederick Halstead, formerly carrying on a business as a shuttle maker, at Hebden Bridge, applied for his discharge from bankruptcy. Mr. J. W. Shaw (Hebden Bridge) appeared behalf of applicant. and Mr.George B. Taylor (Halifax), one of the largest creditors, opposed the apolitation.— The Official Receiver explained that this. was a 1905 case, and a dividend of 2s 6d. in the pound had been paid. The case was a vary ordinary one, but he would like to call attention to the fact that Halstead had an interest under his grandmother's will. Previously, he (the Official Receiver) did not know what would come of this share, and thought the bankrupt's estimate of £130 too high. it appeared, however, that he was entitled to a sum of £200, subject to a life Interest of his mother and aunt. and, ulti mately, a further dividend would be paid to the creditors. From the report It appeared that bankrupt omitted to keep proper books, continued to trade after he knew he was insolvent, contracted debts without reason. able expectation of discharging them, and had contributed to his insolvency by extravagant living.—Mr Shaw pointed out that the fact of reversionary interest coming into the estate would make a dividend of close upon 10s In the pound. Bankrupt was formerly in the employ of his father, and. intending to better his position, left his father's service, and commenced business on his own account. Difficulties arose, however, and bankrupt got into the hands of money leaders, with the result that he was pressed for payment. and filed his petition. He (Mr. Shaw) recognised that His Honour could not grant an unconditional discharge, but he asked that if supension took place that it should be the minimum.—His Honour commented on the observations of the Official Receiver, and said he did not think in fairness he ought to pass them over. He thought he must follow his usual rule, and granted the discharge, suspending it for three years.⁹
