How Burnley Soldier was Killed
Mr. Halstead, of 9 Aigburth-street, Burnley, has learned this week how his son, Pte. Fred Halstead, was killed France. It appears he was in a working party well behind the lines, when there was a shout of "Shells." The men ran into an old disused German trench, and all but the sergeant had reached it when a big shell dropped right in their midst. Three men, including Pte. Halstead, were killed outright, and the others more or less severely injured. Three of these, including Halstead's comrade, Fielding Crabtree, of 256 Rochdale-road, Todmorden. afterwards died from their wounds. The shell was a stray one, as there, had not been one sent, in that locality all day. Pte. Halstead was wounded in the same district on April 24 of last year.9
