Fatal Railway Accident. About eleven o'clock on Saturday night last, a shocking and fatal accident occurred at the level crossing on the Midland Railway near to Heir's House, Colne. A man named William Halstead, aged 27, a weaver, was crossing the line, when it is supposed he was knocked down and run over the Scotch express. His left arm was torn off and his skull fractured, and he was quite dead when found lying in the four-feet about half-past eleven by an engine tenter named John Salt. Deceased had been at a flower show at Cross Gates, and was returning home fresh in drink. —An inquest was held at the Crown Hotel, on Tuesday morning, before Mr. H. J. Robinson, the new coroner.—Julia Halstead, widow of deceased, said her husband left home Saturday afternoon, and she never saw him alive afterwards.—James Laycock, farmer, Wanless Farm, stated he met the deceased at ten minutes to eleven on Saturday night, near to Heir's House about 150 yards distant from the level crossing. Deceased was fresh in drink, and asked what time it was. Witness saw passenger train passing towards Colne a few minutes afterwards. John Salt, engine tenter, stated he found deceased lying the four feet, at aquarter to twelve. His left arm was cut off. and lying inside the rails. He was quite dead. The jury, after a few minutes' deliberation, returned a verdict ' Accidental death,' recommending the coroner to write to the railway company, calling attention the state of the crossing, and suggesting a foot-bridge. The coroner was also recommended to call attention to the dangerous approaches the Colne Railway Station, caused by luggage trains being shunted across the footway.7

At inquest at Warrington yesterday, complaints of the bright lights of an American vehicle were made by a motor driver.
The inquest was on George Bell Halstead, aged 62. steel erector, Hall Avenue. South Shore, Blackpool, lodging in Longshaw Street, Warrington, who was fatally injured in Folly Lane, Warrington. on December 16, by a car driven by Walter Griffiths, traffic manager, of Birtles Road. Orford, Warrington. Griffiths told the coroner, Mr. C. Bolton, that the lights of an American vehicle in his rear, shining through the back window of his car on to an inside mirror, obscured his vision and caused him to drive with the utmost caution. He was travelling 20 to 25 m.p.h. It was pitch-black night, and he did not see the man until he struck him.
After the coroner had returned a verdict of “Death from misadventure." Mr. T. Steel, junior solicitor for the driver, said that those who had to meet and be followed by these American vehicles had experienced great inconvenience. The lights of these vehicles were a danger to other users of the road.8
