Obituary of James HALSTEAD: on 8 September 1906 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, THE LATE Mr. James Halstead
On Friday, August 31, there passed from this world one who left upon it a deep impression. When some men die they leave no evidences of their having lived, while the strenuous lives of others can be recalled by many landmarks for long times to come. In the case of the late Mr. James Halstead, of steamboat and Trafalgar Square fame, the memories he has left behind are of great variety. The ancient saying, "Speak not ill of the dead," should not, in his case, be forgotten. He would have been one of the last to claim perfection ; be seldom spoke of himself, and never in self praise, The writer of this sketch, during a friendship of ten years, never, to best of his present recollection, heard him speak ill of others, but oflen in praise.
Sixty four years ago ,the light of day was.first perceived by this man who finally closed his eyes upon it last Friday afternoon. He was born in Essex, England, and died at " Southminster," Lower Bay View Street, Lavender Bay, North Sydney. In the interval he travelled and laboured on many seas and lands. He has several times told the writer "I began work at six years of age, when I helped in the fields." Of course this was but half in jest. He dearly loved funny talk, and ever brought it into business."Things go along more smoothly when greased with wit." he said.
At an eatly age he went to sea and served to the attainment of his A.B. degree on the coasts of England, Ireland. Scotland, Holland, the Spanish Main, etc. He found time to see bull fights in Spain, and hundreds of other peculiar thiDgs, and to pick up just a little of several languages. In his dog watches, and when ashore, he studied music, and became not a mean performer on the flute and one or two other instruments. In fact, for some time before leaving home at last for 'a life on the ocean wave,' he played regularly in the little village church.
One incident in his sailoring life shows something of his outspoken and sturdy nature. The vessel had been driven by unfavourable winds and the carelessness and stubborn ness of the captain, a long way out of her proper course. The food, which was wretched in quality, was being saved and served out with great stint. The sailors grumbled. They elected young Jim Halstead to be their spokesman to the captain.
"Well," cried that disagreeable worthy, when the broad shouldered young fellow stood before him twirling his cap, what's the matter now ?''
"The men. sir, told me to tell you that they can't stand it much longer!"
"Stand what?" thundered the skipper.
"Weevily biscuits an' not enough of them, and short rations of bad food generally, and they want to go home !
"Oh. indeed, They want to go home, do they ? Well, see here, you go back to work, you d--d mutineer, or I'll put you,in irons,— and I'll do the same for any other —that give me any of their lip ! "
That night Jim saw the skipper on deck, in a corner, and he pummelled him heartily, pummelled him until he obtained irom him a promise to change the course of the vessel and steet for home. The captain kept his word : he had to the action was necessary as it turned out, for the safety of all, and the men were in the right and the commander in the wrong.
His seafaring eventually brought him, at about 22 years of age, or 42 years ago, to Sydney. Here he travelled between Sydney and Melbourne, and rose in rank. He later on became a purveyor for men-o'-war, and his launch earned him much money in those days in the service of our navy. He used then to convey parties all around the foreshores of Mosman and Middle Harbour. Many a company of theatrical people or wealthy picnickers be cared for on their holidays.
It was at this time, we believe, that he acquired land at Trafalgar Square. Of course it did not cost him much in those days when it was all covered with bush and scrub, and few people, if any, ever dreamt of its magnificent future. .
James Halstead entered the service of the old Milson's Point Ferry Company. He became a master, and later the manager. While; manager he advocated the building of two-ended screw boats, and formulated the plans of the first twoended screw steamer run in Port Jackson.
For this he deserves every credit. He was an enthusiast on the subject of two-ended screw steamers, and his great personal magnetism and energy carried all-before him. The thing became an accomplished fact and reigns to this day. In saying that he did not speak in praise of himself. I should have made an exception of ship building. There is no doubt that he was proud of having been the first to build two-ended screw steamers for the N.S. Ferry.
He meantime took recreation in bowling. He was up to the last a popular and enthusiastic member of the North Sydney Bowling Club, and dearly loved to trundle a bowl on a good green. His friends in the club he reckoned among his best, and he would miss many things rather than his afternoon's bowling.
In 1895 and 1896 he built Trafalgar Square, all but the second storey of the three houses next to Myahgah Road. The first storey of these three shops was completed in December, 1896, and it was from one of them, in October, 1897, that the first number of THE BAZAAR the piedecessor of the MOSMAN MAIL was issued. The writer remembers calling Mr. Halstead into that shop and saying to him,—
" I was thinking, Mr. Halstead, of starting a little advertising sheet in Mosman, to advertise the local shopkeepers."
" It's a good idea, I think. Just what's wanted. And I'll give you a start. You can put me down for an advertisement of the grocery to cost 2/6 or 3/- for the first number."
He then conducted the grocery lately and for some years run by Mr. Logan.
People said Mr. Halstead was mad in building this row of shops. Who was going to buy in them ? They were too big, too many. But he replied to them in his usual jovial manner,— .
" You'll want little things yourself," he would say, "I'll keep the best ol everything, and sell it cheap. Besides, there'll be shoals of people in Mosman by-aud-bye."
His judgement proved to be correct.
Although he was not of the kind to take a public position such as that of alderman, he exercised indirectly an influence in regard to some local matters, such, for instance, as the location of the Town Hall. When Alderman John Noble was Mayor of Mosman, they were frequently together. Not more, perhaps, than formerly and for years, for they were good friends. Mr. Halstead used to visit Alderman Noble at his beautiful home That sits serene Above the silvery sheen Of lonely Long Bay. I believe they enjoyed there many a long pipe, churchwardens, perhaps,—for Mr. Halstead was fond of these in memory of cosy little hotel parlours in London in his boyhood's sailoring days. And many an interesting yarn no doubt they exchanged, for Mr. Noble too, had seen much of the world—particularly of railroad construction in the wilds of Western America.
During this period, that of Mr. Noble's mayoralty, when he was fighting to get the Town Hall erected where it now eventually stands, the deceased told me that he backed up his friend John in the stand he was taking. He encouraged him, and helped him in the thinking and planning of the matter. There were doubtless, in fact I know there were, other local public matters upon which these friends conversed -and on which Mr. Halstead'.s ideas were found practical and sound. He often arranged for shows to come here to please the children of the borough. : He wished to attract population. Otherwise he did not trouble much about public matters.
He was very fond of children, They, were fond of him, too, and.he loved for them to play their little tricks upon him.. He romped with thoase that came about the Square and his hearty guffaw could be heard all over the place. He gave them balls and other toys, and took a deep interest in the amusements of the most youthful,
He built other shops near Traalgar Square, and those-four shops called Nelson Parade, at the corner of Harbour Street.
By the way. he was exceedingly patriotic. The tune, above all others, that he liked was 'The Death of Nelson,"On Trafalgar Day he always saw that flags were flying to the breeze from the roof of Trafalgar buildings. And when the band came along he seldom failed to secure the playing of that martial dirge by the donation of half-a-crown or so. T,he band that has been coining on Saturday nights to play at the Spit Junction, has missed him painfully since he became confined to his bed, for he used to give them at every visit, five shillings or more.
In his quiet home at Lavender Bay, attended by his good wife, and neice, and his faithful man-of-allwork, Michael Kelaher, he at last allowed the world to slip from beneath his feet, and became an adventurer upon the seas of eternity.
His remains, followed by many friends, were interred last Saturday afternoon at Gore Hill Cemetery.6
