DIED WITH 36 HOURS, BURIED TOGETHER
Mr. Richard Halstead, a native of Nelson, and his wife Mrs. Eva Halstead, a native of Bamoldswick, died within 36 hours of each other last week at the home of their son at 77 King Street, Briertield. On Friday they were buried together—as they always hoped they would be when the time came- at Gill Cemetery, Bamoldswick, within a matter of yards of the home of another son Gill Lane. with whom they had lived for some time. They were aged 76 and 75 respectively.
Mr. Halstead had been in the cotton trade in a small family concern at Meadowbank Mill, Brierfield, but since his retirement had lived with his son at Gill Lane, Barnoldswick. until about five years ago. From that time until quite recently Mr. and Mrs. Halstead had resided in Halstead Street. Nelson, removing their son’s home in Briertield when their health began to fail.
Mrs. Halstead died on March 8th. and her husband passed away 36 hours later.
Funeral services were conducted Canon C. C. Mackay, and floral tributes were received from: The family; Ethel. Ronald and Glenys; Mr. and Mrs. Burton; Vince; Bertha and Martha; Mr. and Mrs. Twist; Mr. and Mrs. Chadwick; Mr. and Mrs. Jackson. Young Married Woman's Complaint
A West Harptree doctor, Oliver Halstead. of Drimpton Cottage. Rudge was accused at Wells City Petty Sessions of an act with intent to insult a 21-year-old married woman at Wells. He was represented by Mr. Norman Skelhorn, barrister, and pleaded not guilty and Mr. Cuthbert B Pardoe prosecuted.
The complainant alleged that she was walking along the pavement in Cathedral Green, and noticed a stationary car by the pavement. She said that she passed the motor-car she looked into the car - and noticed a man sitting at the driver's seat. She described the alleged offence, and said she complained to another woman who was passing.
P.S. Mills said defendant admitted he was driving his motor-car in Wells that morning, but denied the offence. P.C. Norman said defendant made a statement in which he denied the allegation.
Defendant, giving evidence, said he was a registered medical practitioner, and was county oculist to the Somerset County Council. He visited schools, carrying out inspections. He was a married man with two grownup daughters. Before he came to Somerset he was school oculist to the London County Council, and had an appointment at the Oxford Eye Hospital He denied the alleged offence. He said he had to go to Shepton Mallet clinic, where he had to inspect children of both sexes He came through Wells where he bought a daily paper. In the Cathedral Green he stopped the car to look at the headlines of the paper. He did not notice anyone passing. No-one spoke to him, and did not speak to anyone. It was raining at the time, and the windows of the car were steamy He denied the evidence of the complainant.
Dr. John F. Davidson, medical officer of health for Somerset, said no complaint had ever reached him of Dr. Halstead's work or conduct Dr. Reginald S. Mackie. Oxford, said he had known Dr. Halstead for about 20 years. They had worked together at the London Hospital for 10 years. He had always had the highest regard for defendant.
Mrs. Eileen Halstead. wife of the defendant, also gave evidence.
Addressing the magistrates, Mr. Skelhorn said the accused had from the beginning emphatically denied the offence.
The Mayor (Ald. E. E. Sheldon) said the Bench had given the case the most careful consideration, and had decided to dismiss it.8
Oliver died on 1 January 1958 at Applehayes Cottage, Clayhidon, Cullompton, Devon, England, at the age of 65.9,10 His estate was probated on 20 March 1958 at Exeter, Devon, England. The estate was valued at £8,110 19s 0d.10
