Sam Halstead, the twelve year old son of Sidney Halstead, Walsden, pleaded guilty to stealing, between April 4th and May 23rd, two golf balls, one cricket ball, and a ball of twine, value 8s., from the shop of Fred Stockdale, ironmonger. Church street, Todmorden, where he was employed as errand boy.
Supt. Peokitt said the boy had been employed at the shop as errand boy. On May 23rd he sold two golf balls to a man at Waisden for 2d. each. They were valued 1s. 6d. each. The cricket ball, also taken from the shop, was given by the boy to his father, who sold it to another man for 2s. The boy told his father that he had had it given, but the father appeared to have taken no steps to ascertain whether this was oorrect The ball of twine was found at the boy's home.
Mr. Garside. manager for Mr. Stockdale, said the boy had been employed at the shop since August 13th. He did not miss the articles, but they were similar to those kept in stock.
Ernest Lewis, pickermaker, 1, Inchfleld-road, Walsden, said that on Saturday afternoon he saw the boy striking a golf ball across the road with coal rake. A friend who was with him asked if it was a golf ball, whereupon the boy asked if he wanted buy it, and then said he had another. Eventually he bought them off the boy for 2d. each.
Ernest Mitchell, a clerk in the employ of the Railway Company, residing at Lumbutts-road, Todmorden, said he bought the ball from the boy’s father for 2s.
P.C. Horrocks spoke to making enquiries and recovering the stolen property. When charged with the theft the boy replied, "I did take them. I took them out of a glass box in a case, and I have taken a cricket ball and ball of twine.”
The Chairman asked the boy’s father why he did not make further inquiries about the cricket balL The father said the boy told him he had got it given at the shop. He asked him if he was telling the truth, and he replied that he was. He then told the boy that it was too heavy for his bat and he might as well dispose of it. He sold it for 2s., which he gave to the boy. He never knew the boy do a wrong thing in his life before.
Mr. Garside asked the Bench to deal leniently with the boy, and said Mr. Stockdale would be only too pleased to give him another chance.
Rev. Charles Paul Keeling, vicar of Todmorden, said he would like to speak to the character of the boy’s father, because his foolish act in allowing the boy to sell the cricket ball seemed rather to reflect on his character. He knew Mr. Halstead intimately, and in the parochial work at St. Mary’s he always stood at the door on the occasion of entertainments and took charge of the money, and there had never been the slightest, reason to suspect anything but the most scrupulous honesty on his part. He believed him to be thoroughly trustworthy.
The lad was bound over for twelve months in the sum of £10, and the father was ordered to pay costs. The Chairman told the boy he must take care in future and try to wipe out this offence. He must be a good boy and do his work properly, and never take anything from anyone in future.4 He witnessed the marriage of Arthur LAW and Alice HALSTEAD on 14 May 1927 at St Mary, Todmorden, Yorkshire, England.5,6
