After a long illness, by which he had been confined to his house since last November, Mr. Job Whittam Hartley died early on Wednesday morning, at Thornhill. Born in 1822, Mr. Hartley was in his 64th year. His career has been a somewhat interesting one. In early life he spent some time on the sea, and afterwards travelled about the country, gaining experience which he utilised to great advantage on arriving at man's estate. He was the only son of John Hartley, formerly of Pike Hill, and was born at Moseley House Farm. He served as apprentice to Mr. Thomas Watson, nailmaker, and afterwards learnt the bolt-making trade, in which he has been eminently successful. In 1851 he built the premises at Lane Bridge, where, in partnership with Mr. Baldwin, he has conducted manufacturing since. In 1862 he commenced manufacturing, but, losing money, he retired in 1874 and stuck to the bolt trade by which he secured a competency. For ten years he was director of the Ocford Mill Company, and at the time of his death was a director of Whittlefield Mill Company, and a partner in the firm of Messrs. T Birtwistle and Co., ironmongers, Market Place. He was connected with the Mechanics Institution almost from its foundation, and had been on the directorate for about nine years; but his chief public services have been rendered during his six year connection with the Board of Guardians, referred to elsewhere.. In polotics he was a Liberal. He married, in 1849, Ann, the youngest daughter of Mr. James Massey, of Burnley, by whom he had a very large family. He leaves a widow, two sons and four daughters. He has been ailing for almost four years. His remains will be interred at the cemetery today (Saturday.)9 His estate was probated on 11 June 1886 at Principal Probate Registry, Middlesex, England.
