Appears in a newspaper article on on 14 August 1869 at SHERIFF'S COURT. B On Monday, in the Sheriff's Court, at Leeds, before Mr. Wheelhouse, sheriff's assessor, an action was heard, by default of the defendant, in order that the jury might assess the damages in a case in which Joseph Halstead appeared as the next friend of his daughter Hannah Halstead. Halstead keeps the Bay Horse Inn, at Longwood, near Huddersfield, and the defendant, James Gledhill, is a woollen manufacturer in the same neighebourhoed.-Mr. Waddy, for the plaintiff, said this was an action in which the defendant did not appear. Mliss Halstead, the daughter of the plaintiff, and a young lady of some personal attractions, is 27 years of age, and she and her family have been acquanted with the family of the defendant for many years. Defendnt has been for some time past in partnership with his father, and there was not only a farm carried on, but they took room and power at Wilsons mill as manufacturers and waste dealers. Within the last few days, however, and for reasons which the jury would guess the defendant had chosen to dissolve the partnership with his father, this beinig gazetted thirteen days after the service of the writ upon the defendant, His father was a man in very good position indeed, having served various offices of honour in his own township. When the defendant first went courting Miss Halstead, her mother made it her business to ascertain what were his intentions. Defendant replied that he intended to marry the girl, upon which the mother allowed them to be more in each other's company. Defendant took advantage of the confidence reposed in him to seduce the plaintiff's daughter, having previously presented her with a watch and other trinkets, and repeatedly promised her marriage. But he shortly after turned his affections from Miiss Halstead, and began to pay his addresses to a Miss Ainley, who has a great deal of money, and who lived in the same neighbourhood. The father of Miss Halstead was now entitled to recover compensation for the less of his daughter's services. A child was born on the 19th January, and was stlill living This dissolution of partnership, the learned counsel contended, had been executed in order that the defendant might make out that he had little or nothing; but this dissolution might be easily upset as soon as the verdict in the present case had been pronounced, for the defendant was even now continuinig to act in the business as he had done previous to the dissolution. He was organist in a Dissenting chapel, a Sunday school-teacher, and a professor of religion; and this the jury might consider made the case worse against the defendant. Miss Hannah Halsteadwas called to prove the facts of the case.-.After further evidence had been taken in corroboration, the jury found a verdict for the plaintiff, damages £20.5
In the census of 2 April 1871 at Bay House Inn, Outlane, Stainland, Yorkshire, England, Joseph was listed as aged 70 born Longwood, the Head of Household; a Woollen Weaver, living with his wife Nancy, sons John and Alfred, daughters Jane and Hannah HALSTEAD, Lodgers Harriet, Hannah and Herbert POGSON.6
Joseph died on 21 June 1871 at Bay Horse Inn, Stainland, Yorkshire, England.7,8 His estate was probated on 17 July 1871 at Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. The estate was valued at under £100.8
