Bruce Bairnsfather famous during the First World War as a cartoonist and the creator of "Old Bill," died on September 29, aged 71. He wrote the play, The Better 'Ole," in collaboration with Arthur Eliot, in which "Old Bill" was the leading character and it was produced at the Oxford in 1917, where it ran for over 800 performances. It had over 300 performances on Broadway the following year. In 1925 he wrote the revue, "Carry On, Sergeant-Major," which also featured "Old Bill." After the 1914-18 war he began sketching in music-halls. and also became a lecturer and film-producer.7 His estate was probated on 14 December 1959 at London, Middlesex.
