Official word was received by his parents on Friday morning that Private Albert Halstead, 133, Barden-lane, Burnley, had been killed in action. The late Private Halstead joined the 11th East Lancashires six weeks after war broke ouht. He was 22 years of age, and before the war worked at Alderman Emmott's mill. He was attached to the Burnley Lads' Club, in connection with which he held several offices. His elder brother, Private Harry Halstead, is in the Royal Engineers. His uncle, Private Ben Halstead, a Burnley Canadian, was taken prisoner on June 8th. Another uncle, Private John Edward Griffiths, is at present in Egypt. Private Halstead was brought up at St. Andrew's Church and School, and a memorial service will be held for him on Sunday morning.
Two regimental friends of his, Bernard Halstead and J Sullivan, in a letter to Mrs. Halstead, dated Monday, July 17th, say:- By the time you get this letter you will most likety have been informed of the death of your son. Albert, who was killed in action on July 1st. We made inquiries after the attack, and the last we could get to of him being alive was that he was with a small party bombing in the German first line. We know the loss to you is great, but you will know he died doing his duty. He will be missed by us out here, as he was one of the best, always cheerful and ready with a joke when we were feeling fed-up."
