In the census of 30 March 1851 at 8 Chappel Street, Burnley, Lancashire, England, she was listed as aged 9 born Burnley, the daughter of Lawrence HALSTED.2 Eliza HALSTED was baptised on 28 March 1854 at St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England.1
Eliza died on 24 July 1855 at River Brun, Burnley, Lancashire, England, at the age of 14 Accidentally drowned in the River Brun.3,1,4

Appears in a newspaper article on on 28 July 1855 at at Burnley, Lancashire, England, Girl Drowned.
At the upper end of Messrs.Riley's (skinner's yard) Church St, two planks are thrown across the river Brun, their respective ends resting on the banks of the river, and on tressels firmly fixed in the centre. These planks have been placed there in order to convey stone and lime from the upper end of Messers Spencer and Moore's new factory to a plot of ground, on the Church Street side of the river, belonging to the said firm, for the purpose of enclosing it. The river is an inconsiderable stream, but liable to sudden swells in consequence of heavy rains. Some of the hands employed at Messers Spencer and Moore's factory, and who reside in and about Church Street, have been in the habit of crossing these planks to and from their work, to save themselves going a considerable distance round. For this purpose they have to pass through the skinner's yard. On Tuesday morning last, the 24th inst., Eliza Halstead a fine girl, about fourteen years of age, daughter of Lawrence Halstead, Shoemaker, Chaffer St., had crossed these planks, with several others, when the factory stopped for breakfast. A little before half-past eight o'clock she passed through the yard with two other girls to return the same way. The river, which at seven o'clock in the morning was not much larger than ordinary, had from the rains of the proceeding night in the course of an hour and a half risen very high, and become a strong and rapid current. Her two companions passed over before her, but as she appeared rather timid, they told her she had better go round. She, however, determined to venture; on gaining the middle of the river, she threw her shawl to the other two girls. In moment afterwards she fell in, and was swept rapidly down by the current. An attempt we understand, was made by two men to catch her at some distance from the place where she fell in, but were unable to keep their feet. She was carried through the arch of the bridge in Bridge Street, where she was last seen. Several parties followed the course of the river for some miles, but returned at night without recovering the body. It was found in the evening of the following day, at Cock Bridge, near Whalley.

A man named John Taylor, in the employ of Messrs. Spencer and Moor, found the body. The inquest will be held this day at the White Hart Inn.4 Eliza was buried on 29 July 1855 at St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire.5

Appears in a newspaper article on on 4 August 1855 at at Burnley, Lancashire, INQUEST.
On Saturday last an inquest was held at the White Hart Inn before J. Hargreaves, Esq., Coroner, and a respectable jury, (Mr. G. Haslam, foreman) on the body of Eliza Halstead, who, as stated in the Advertiser of last week, was drowned in the River Brun on Tuesday the 24th of July, the body not being found until the evening of the following day. After viewing the body, the jury proceeded to the place where the accident happened. The Coroner made several inquiries relative to the purpose for which the planks had been thrown across the river, and then sent to request some one from the firm of Messrs. Spencer and Moore to be present at the inquest. Mr. H. Moore attended.
Mary Ann Bradshaw was the first witness examined. She deposed, that she was employed in Messrs. Spencer and Moore's factory as a weaver. She went with the deceased on Tuesday morning to the planks thrown over the River Brun. They could get a nearer way to the mill by the planks. Witness crossed the planks first safely, when she got over she looked back to the other side; deceased was standing on the end of the plank, and said "I am almost sure I shall fall in." She then came forward about a yard and stopped. She kept looking into the water. Witness asked her if she might go and help her over as she thought deceased was going sick. Deceased said "No, I can get over myself." She still kept looking at the water. Witness then said "I can see thou art going sick, and I will come and help thee over." She did not speak. Witness then got on the plank to help her over, and deceased fell into the river as soon as witness got upon the plank. She saw her after she had fallen in, she came up twice, and put her hands over her face. (Her father who was present was here very much affected.) The water was very high, there had been a great deal of rain at night the deceased was carried down the stream. She had crossed the planks twice that morning. Witness had seen her go over before, and she seemed to do so without difficulty. The water was as high when she went over to her breakfast. Witness thought she was mazy made her fall, she had not been so before- The workpeople from that side (Church Street) generally went over the planks to their work. If they did not go that way they would have to go by the Bank. It saved a distance of about quarter of a mile. Nobody told witness to go that way, and she had not been told not to go.
John Taylor said that he was a labourer employed by Messrs Spencer and Moore. He heard of the deceased falling into ihe water about twenty minutes past eight o'clock: people were screaming about. He ran to a place forty or fifty yards below the planks. There were two men there who had seen her, and one of them endeavoured to catch her as she went down. He then came up the hill from the water and ran down the street. He saw her going down the water as he looked from the street. He then went to seek her following the stream to the water-meetings near Royle. He then returned, and afterwards went again as far as Altham. He did not find her, and came back home. The next day he set off about five o'clock in the morning to seek her ; others went with him. They went below Altham bridge and then thought of returning, but some of them would go lower. They then went to Cock bridge and came back by the banks of the river. They found her about 300 yards on this side of Cock bridge, about five miles from Burnley. She had been stopped by two stones across which she was lying. She was worst bruised about her face. Her frock was torn at the back, and her brat was lost. They brought her home. She would pass over five or six calls to the place where she was found. The planks may have been thrown over the river about two months. One of them is called a half balk, the other a plank about a foot wide; the planks were about three and a half yards from the water. He had often crossed the plank; he worked there. If any one walked over the planks carefully he let them pass; but those who did not he prevented. He did not think it dangerous to cross if they went quietly. Mr. Spencer told them to put tressel across to prevent people going over, they had done so once, a day or two before the accident, but some one took it away.
Lawrence Halstead, the father of the deceased said; the deceased was thirteen years old last December. He was aware she went over the planks; but he had cautioned her not to go. It was not right to go that way to work. She had been cautioned by all at home against going. He told her himself it was dangerous; she did not pay any attention to him. She told him on the morning of the accident, that she had come that way, and would go that way back.
H. Mooee said, Mr. Spencer had caused the planks to be thrown across the river for the purpose of conveying materials to build a wall; the work would have been done before then but for Mr. Spencer's illness. Had he known that people went that way, he should have stopped them long ago. From what the witnesses had said he had no doubt that those who went over the plank, did so when they were too late, instead of passing through the lodge. The planks should be removed that afternoon.
The jury returned verdict of Accidental Death.
At the conclusion Mr. Moore, in answer to a question by the Coroner previously put, suggested that the Commissioners should take into consideration the propriety of placing iron grating at the bridge in Bridge Street for the purpose of stopping any one who might fall in above. The jury generally concurred in this suggestion. It was not formally recommended.4
