Obituary of John CUTTS: on 18 February 1922 at Morecombe, Lancashire, England, LATE MR. JOHN CUTTS.
Passing of Old Lancastrian with Interesting Career.
One of the oldest and most respected Lancastrians passed away on Friday, by the death of Mr. John Cutts, retired dentist, Regent-street. Deceased was born on July 31st, 1833, and was. therefore, in his 89th year. He was a son of Mr. John Cutts, accountant who died in Chapel-street, Lancaster, on Oct 15th, 1862. In his youth he was a keen oarsman, and on the nomination of the late Mr. Samuel Gregson. M.P., received an appointment as Mail Guard from the late Duke of Argyle, Postmaster General. In 1856 he passed the prescribed examination of the Civil service commissioners: and was in the travelling post office. and in 11 years rose from 4th to 1st class. being next on turn for Inspector. when he retired from the service in 1869. Adapting himself to the dental profession he became a member of the British Dental Association. and in 1887 attended a conference of that body in Lancaster. He contined to practice as a surgeon dentist at 36. King-street. until a few years ago when his son. Mr. Fred E. Cutts, dental sureeon, took sole charge.
Deceased was twice married. his first wife. Julia. dying on May 19th. 1893, leaving a family of two, sons—Mr. John HaIstead Cutts. Macclesfield, and Mr. F. E. Cutts. and two daughters, one of whom married Mr. W. Talbot Caddow. eldest son of the late Mr. John Caddow. Lancaster Lodge, Sefton Park. Liverpool, on Aug. 13th, 1887. and lost her husband at Las Palmas. on July 7. 1903, the younger daughter being Mrs. J. E. Oglethorpe, Eden Park. Mr. Cutts was married the second time at Carlisle on Seept 10th. 1898. to Elizabeth B. Pattinson. who survives.
Fifty Years Ago.
For many years. Mr. Cutts showed a friendly dispostion to the "Guardian." being especially helpful in his reminiscences for the "Fifty Years Ago " column.
He was a devoted Churchman, being a sidesman for many years at Lancaster Parish Church. till 1912. when he resigned and attended St. Thomas' Church. being a sidesman there for 15 years.
As a member of the Old Merchants News Room, he was also interested in the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, and in 1902 proposed a resolution urging upon the Lancaster Corporation the pressing need for a municipal telephone service for Lancaster and Morecambe. At the time the subscription in Lancaster was £10, and in Morecambe £8. while in Glasgow there was unlimited service for £5 5s., and Tunbridge Wells £5 17s. 6d.
Lancaster Motto.
Mr. Cutts was in 1907 able to give as the explanation of the origin of "Luck to Loyne." which was adopted then. Years ago, when Lancaster was a seaport town of some importance, there were quite a number of sailors belonging to the town. Whenever they met in port, in this or any other country, their custom was to propose:
"Here's luck-to the Loyne.
And the lads with long breeches"
The first part of the toast referred to the town they came from, and the second to their fellow sailors hailing from the same port. Knee breeches were (according to old prints) worn by civilians. and sailors were supposed to be the first to wear tong trousers to keep their legs warm.
The Funeral.
The remains of the deceased were interred at Lancaster Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, the cortege detouring from the residence in Regent Street to St. Thomas' Church. Upon the oak coffin were placed floral tributes from the family and friends. The Rev. R. A. Finley (Vicar) conducted an impressive service.
